Creating/deleting a vSphere Distributed Switch

The vSphere Web Client in the Networking category can be used to create a new vDS. Just right-click on the desired data center (vDS can span clusters in the same data center) and select Distributed Switch | New Distributed Switch.... Then, on the Name and location page, type a name for the new vDS, or accept the automatically generated name, and click Next.

Now, on the Select version page, you need to select a vDS version:

Each version defines a different compatibility with a different version of vSphere, but also different functions, as described in the following table:

Then, on the Edit settings page, configure the proper vDS settings:

Use the arrow buttons to select the Number of uplinks, which is the maximum number of allowed physical connections to the distributed switch per host.

Use the drop-down menu to enable or disable Network I/O Control (NIOC). NIOC will be described and discussed in Objective 2.2.

Select the Create a default port group checkbox to automatically create a new distributed port group with default settings. Note that the port group can also be created after the virtual switch, as described later.

The vDS will be created in the selected data center. The features supported on the distributed switch, as well as other details, can be viewed by clicking the Summary tab of the new distributed switch.
